Upcoming Goodies!

Ecology Clubbies,

There is no meeting this week – it’s another midterm week and most of us are still recovering from our Spring Break adventure. In fact, just wait for us to call the next meeting – we have a lot of fun events coming up and not much need for boring ol’ meetings. ūüôā

Spring Retreat 2010: Odum Cabin at Spring Hollow in Ila, March 26-28. Directions from campus – travel time 20-30 minutes.

Carpools will be meeting in the Ecology-Green St. parking lot at 5:30pm Friday the 26th and will return to campus Sunday the 28th early afternoon. If you’d like to catch a ride, email us within the week.
Group bike ride will leave from the Ecology bldg. at 5pm Friday the 26th. Our bike route – roughly 20 miles, will take 1-2 hours. Beginners welcome (there will be groups going different speeds) but helmet required.
Ecology Club will pay for food, but be prepared to pitch your driver a few bucks for gas. If you would like to partake in beverages, bring $5 and your own cup.
You will need a flashlight/headlamp, hiking shoes, sleeping bag (tent if you’d like to camp but there’s plenty of room in the cabin), and any instruments/games you have.

Awesome Weekend v.2010: Crockford-Pigeon Mountain WMA and Tennessee Aquarium, April 16-18. Our trip map. Last year’s photos.

Carpools will leave the Ecology-Green St. parking lot at 4pm Friday the 16th and will return to campus Sunday the 18th early evening. Email us if you want to carpool.

We will camp at Pigeon Mtn. Friday and Saturday nights and spend Saturday hiking, rock climbing, herping, and caving.

We will leave Pigeon Mtn Sunday morning and drive to Chattanooga, TN (one hour north) for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Tennessee Aquarium.
Ecology Club will pay for food, but you must split gas with your driver (a.k.a. we need full carpools).
You will need full camping regalia: flashlight/headlamp, tent/sleeping bag, hiking shoes/clothes, and shirt/long pants that can be destroyed by Petty John’s Cave. (evil laughter). Durso, Todd, and Mark will try their best to not lose anyone further than one mile underground.

PLEASE RESPOND ASAP: We need a headcount to secure the Aquarium tour. If you plan on joining us, we need to know within the week! Feel free to join us just Sunday if you can’t make the rest of the weekend.

¬†Always lovin’,

Mark and Georgia

p.s. Our very own Andrew Durso will be joining us from the frigid, herp-barren cornfields of Illinois! Yay!

Come to the OSE Graduate Student Symposium

Ecology Clubbies,

This weekend is both the Athens Green Life Expo and the Odum School of Ecology Graduate Student Symposium.

The Symposium is this Friday and Saturday and features lots of great talks from grad students. You can access the full program here.

The Expo is also this Friday and Saturday and features awesome seminars. The schedule can be found here.

Both events are completely free and you’ll find plenty of clubbies at both.

See you there!

Let’s Go, Ecology Club!

Ecolovers, It’s time to begin.

  • The Winter Activities Fair is tomorrow (Tuesday, 26th)! We’ll be tabling from 11am – 3pm in the Tate Grand Hall Ballroom – stop by, help us hold down the table (we’d REALLY appreciate it), and visit the other Go Green Alliance booths.
  • For our first meeting tomorrow, we’ll be taking a tour of the UGA Research Greenhouses! Info here. Please meet tomorrow (Tuesday, 26th) outside the Ecology building (front brick ramp) at 4:50pm SHARP. Cars will be waiting – we’ll carpool over to Riverbend Road and be back within the hour. Get pumped! The Director himself is showing us around!
  • Then, on Wednesday (27th), we’re having a potluck dinner at Dr. Jim Richardson’s house! Please join us at 550 Southview Rd. (it’s REALLY close… map it and carpool/bike/walk) from 6pm – 8:30pm with a dish or drink for some great conversation and friend-time with a favorite professor.
  • But wait! It’s not over! This weekend is the Athens Green Life Expo! Info here. It’s Friday and Saturday, it’s at the Classic Center, it’s all free, and check out some of these seminars – really cool. A lot of us will be here, so join us!

Yay! Remember, all this and more on our website and calendar (website tab – look up).

Great Opportunities for EC Members

Beautiful ecoladies and sustainable gentlemen,

Several opportunities you should know about:

1. Volunteer positions at UGA Ecolodge in San Luis
2. EPA Fellowship for undergraduates
3. “Ecotones” acapella group seeking members
4. SMART Initiative seeking motivated students

1. The University of Georgia’s Costa Rica campus (San Luis de Monteverde, Costa Rica) is currently accepting applications for the following volunteer staff positions:

  • Resident Naturalist: 2 positions available in April/May 2010
  • Administrative Assistant: 1 position available June 15, 2010

More information is available at our website: If you know someone who would be a great match for either position, please have them contact me (Lindsay Stallcup) by email at

2. Awesome EPA fellowship:

All Vocalists and Ecology Enthusiasts, Last week, I had a party at my place and a few of us ecology graduate students ended up singing some songs together.¬† The thought came up that we should start a co-ed A Cappella vocal group called the ECOTONES. We would sing arrangements of contemporary songs by U2, Black-Eyed Peas, The Eagles, 10,000 Maniacs, etc.¬† We’d meet about every other week for rehearsal.¬† Things would be pretty laid back and open to profs, staff, graduate students, post docs, undergrads, and non-students.¬† No vocal training or extensive experience is necessary and we won’t have auditions.¬† All are welcome. We already have 13 people signed up but we need more vocalists to fill out our sound.¬† We are also looking for a beat-boxer or vocal percussionist.¬† Drop me a line if you think this sounds fun. ¬†I’ll need your name, email, vocal part, and phone number.¬†¬†Hope to hear from you soon. ¬†Thanks. -Blair 919-881-0783

4. From Cody Parmer: The SMART initiative will be continued next semester through internships provided by Dr. Pickering as ECOL 4940 which counts as an elective for the major. Currently we have 11 enrolled and we need a minimum of 10 or the class doesn’t go through.¬† Is there anyone interested in taking this course for 3 hours of credit? The course will be very non-traditional and will basically be focused on taking SMART to the next level. ¬†Our goals for the semester are to work with the administration on internalizing energy costs on a building to building basis, working across campus to establish standard indoor temperatures of 65-68 degrees in the winter and 75-78 in the summer and launching an educational campaign across campus to teach sustainable and responsible energy use practices. ¬†We really just need 4 or 5 motivated individuals to make sure this thing is done right next semester.
If interested them e-mail Cody at

Love always,
